Start Off Your Summer Safely this Memorial Day

As Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start to Summer 2017, most have already made plans to have fun with family and friends like grilling, swimming, going to the beach, and enjoying fireworks. While all these time-honored pastimes are great ways to celebrate the upcoming holiday, outdoor activities pose particularly high risks for injury if caution is not exercised. Accordingly, numbers of accidents occurring at home and on the roads often spike on Memorial Day weekend–but you don’t have to be one of them. Here are some easy ways you can avoid pitfalls on this patriotic holiday weekend:

Road safety:

  •  Resist the temptation to use your phone while driving; have a passenger handle GPS navigation and phone calls
  •  Do not tailgate; maintain a 2-3 second interval between vehicles
  •  Be aware of the speed limit at all times and watch out for motorcyclists

Grilling safety:

  •  Keep children and pets away from the grilling area
  •  Never leave the grill unattended
  •  The grill should be placed well away from any buildings, railings, overhanging branches, or anything else that could catch fire

Swimming safety:

  •  Always have at least one adult watching children when they are in the water, never leave them unattended
  •  In swimming pools, teach kids to avoid drains or suction outlets
  • At the beach, swim near a lifeguard; watch out for rip currents and nearby swimmers
