What Happened? The Collapse Of A Surfside Building Leaves Hundreds Missing And Many Dead
Early on Thursday morning, June 24, a 12-story residential condo building located not far from Miami Beach partially collapsed. An estimated 55 units of the 136-unit building known as the Champlain Towers South suddenly fell to the ground with no obvious cause. While a large portion of the building is still standing, the part of the building that collapsed is completely destroyed, leaving friends and family members to wonder whether their loved ones survived. According to CNN News, as of Thursday afternoon, 99 individuals were accounted for, still leaving many missing. Rescuers have worked day and night to search for any survivors who may be trapped in the rubble of the Surfside condominium.
The collapse of the building shook the nearby neighborhoods and left a coat of debris on cars up to two blocks away from the condominium. Many people were awakened due to the noise, and video of the collapse was caught on multiple cameras and phones and can be seen here.
The Mayor of Surfside, Charles Burkett, spoke with the building manager, who warned the Mayor that additional bodies could be found due to the large number of tenants residing in the building. He also stated that the building could collapse further in the future if measures are not taken now to prevent that from happening.
As of Friday, June 25, 159 people are still missing and four people have been confirmed dead. Authorities have begun taking DNA samples from family members of residents who are still missing in the event that their bodies are recovered.
At this time, officials have not given a clear answer as to what caused the collapse. However, Governor Desantis has promised to have engineers evaluate the building to determine the cause.
The Champlain Towers South Condos is located at 8777 Collins Avenue and was built in 1891. The condominiums are beachfront and are a popular location for surfers, beach-goers, and long-time Miami residents.
