RSD is a horrible condition that occasionally occurs as a by-product of a direct injury from an accident. RSD stands for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy and is also referred to as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS. RSD causes pain, burning, exquisite tenderness to touch, swelling, discoloration and uncontrolled feeling of coolness or heat to the affected area. The affected area can travel and increase too. The cause is unclear, but it is commonly associated with a traumatic injury such as those that occur in a car or other types of accidents. It is believed to be a product of the autonomic nervous system going “haywire” in response to injury. Depression often accompanies RSD, and RSD sufferers have a much higher rate of suicide. There is no cure; treatment can only minimize the pain and slow resulting dysfunction.
“I can’t thank you enough for all the hard work that you and your staff put into the case. I know that the recovery would not be possible without all the effort. I always felt 200% confident to have you as my attorney. Thank you so much for everything!”
The burning pain, also known as allodynia, is so horribly painful that many RSD victims can’t stand to wear clothing that brushes or touches the affected area. A light breeze on the skin or goose bumps or even being startled can trigger a severe pain reaction in those with RSD. It is often compared to the pain related to Shingles. The medical procedures used to minimize the pain and slow the spread of the condition include steroid injections, oral medications – usually a combination of pain relievers like Gabapentin and anti-depressants – spinal nerve blocks, surgical procedures to deaden the nerves or to implant pain pumps or spinal cord stimulators. The medical costs associated with treating RSD can be extraordinarily high.
Michael Walker of Florin|Roebig P.A. settled a litigation for his client who had RSD. The settlement terms are confidential but suffice it to say that the client’s future, both in terms of medical care and quality of life, will be greatly enhanced with the settlement. The client, a 29-year-old Hispanic female rear-ended in a car accident, suffered a relatively minor knee injury, a torn meniscus, which progressed into full-blown RSD. At the time of settlement, her medical expenses totaled more than $180,000 and her future medical needs were estimated to be over $1,000,000. She worked in the fashion industry at the time of the accident. During her case, she decided to change her career path – to go to medical school and become a doctor who can help others with this painful, life-altering condition. With her settlement, she will be able to fully focus on the positive aspects of her future and won’t need to worry about paying for her medical care or supporting herself while she earns her medical degree. She was very appreciative of the legal work on her case.
We are proud to have been able to help her and inspired by her determination. We wish her the best.
