What is Actos and what issues does it cause?

Actos (pioglitazone) is an anti-diabetic medication used to control high blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. Actos helps to restore the body’s response to insulin, which in turn lowers the body’s blood sugar.

On June 15, 2011, the FDA released a Safety Announcement informing the public that the use of the medication Actos (pioglitazone) for more than one year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. This Actos bladder cancer warning came following the FDA’s review of data from an ongoing ten year epidemiological study. Additionally, the FDA acknowledge a French study that suggests an increased risk of bladder cancer in patients taking Actos and lead to France suspending the use of the drug.
