FDA Announces Investigation in to Heart & Stroke Risk for Testosterone Products
On January 31, 2014, the FDA released a Safety Announcement informing the public that the FDA is investigating the risk of stroke, heart attack and death caused by FDA-approved testosterone products. The FDA made this announcement after the publication of two studies that had suggested a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular events in men prescribed testosterone therapies. These testosterone products are provided to men who have low testosterone levels or lack testosterone.
Studies Show Serious Heart Risk for Testosterone Therapy Patients
The two recent studies that the FDA reviewed prior to their Safety Announcement were from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and another observational study. In November 2013, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a study with revealing a 30% increased risk for stroke, heart attack and death among men taking testosterone therapies. After a three years of taking testosterone therapy, approximately over 25% of patients on testosterone therapy experienced a cardiovascular event. In another observational study published on January 29, 2014, it was observed that men 65 years and older have a two-fold increase in the risk of experiencing a heart attack (myocardial infarction) after 90 days of taking testosterone therapy. Additionally, younger men with a history of heart disease were observed to have a two to three-fold increase in risk of a heart attack within the 90 days following their initial testosterone therapy.
Testosterone Therapy Pharmaceutical Sales
Testosterone Therapy is a rapidly growing field in pharmaceutical sales. The pharmaceuticals are branded under the names: AndroGel, Androderm, Axirom, Bio-T-Gel, Delatestryl, Depo-Testosterone, Fortesta, Striant, Testim, Testopel. These medications are prescribed to males for a condition known as “Low T” and taken in the form of injections, pills, patches, and gels that are absorbed in the skin. The studies show that physicians have limited or no knowledge of the side effects of Testosterone Therapy and the on-going use of these pharmaceuticals being prescribed. The New York Times has also reported that Testosterone Therapy has increased the health risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death without providing any benefits to the “Low T” or Low Testosterone condition. Pharmaceutical companies have created a market for Testosterone Therapy with direct advertising to consumers for males to be treated for “Low T” or Low Testosterone. The marketing by these pharmaceutical companies has suggested males that have experienced periods of decreased libido, lack of energy, sadness or simply feeling sleepy after eating should be treated for “Low T” (low testosterone). Most people experience many of these conditions naturally and declining levels of testosterone is normal as all males age.
What are Testosterone Therapy Products?
